Program: Our spring event will feature two guest speakers, as well as the
viewing/judging of our Quilt Challenge 2010.
First Presentation:
We Are Not the Quilt Police
by Mary Derry, NQA Certified Judge
Have your ever wondered...
...how quilts are judged at quilt shows?
...what judges are looking at when they critique quilt show entries?
...what common problems judges see in design and workmanship and how to
avoid them?
...what, exactly, the judges’ comments mean?
Then join us for Mary’s very insightful presentation on learning to
look at quilting challenges from a judge’s perspective.
Second Presentation:
The Journey of a Quilter
by Nancy Bell, NH Juried Quilter
Nancy will be presenting a trunk show of her work in her journey as a quilter.
She will be bringing some of her early pieces right up through her latest
creations. There will be a variety of finished pieces and some
tops and any of the pieces will be scrap. Most of her work is pieced,
but she also will have several appliqué pieces. Her talk will focus
on scrap quilts with tips and information on organizing your scraps.
About our presenters:
Mary Derry has been quilting since 1981. With a RN and BSN Mary worked
in hospitals for 35 years but retired in 1994 to open My Favorite Quilt
Shop in Gainesville, Florida. After selling the shop in 2004, Mary started
the research and practice required by the National Quilting Society to
receive their certification as a professional quilt judge. In 2009 Mary
became Northern New England’s first NQA Certified Judge. She joined
only 75 other Certified Judges in the United States. Mary has taught classes
in shops, guilds, and shows in New Hampshire and Florida. She believes
that her teaching background makes her a better judge, and that being a
judge helps her to be a better teacher. Mary now lives in Bradford,
NH.
Nancy Bell took her first quilting class in 1975. She has been teaching
and quilting ever since. She is past president of the Hannah Dustin
Quilt Guild and the New England Quilt Guild. She has chaired the Image
Quilt Show and Hannah Dustin Quilt Show. For many years she has taught
for several NH guilds, as well as local quilt shops. Nancy's body of
work is extensive and includes machine piecing and appliqué. She has
had her quilts juried and accepted in such quilt shows as the Vermont Quilt
Festival, A Quilters Gathering and Images Quilt Show in Lowell.
